Spend a Little time, make a Big difference

Big Brothers Big Sisters needs YOUR help to ensure that every child in our community that wants a mentor has one. There are many ways to help our organization. The following are ways that people can get involved:

Be a Big Brother or Big Sister
Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do! The program is designed to build a match between you and a child based on shared interests, personalities and your volunteer preferences.

Being a Big is fun and simple! It’s as easy as showing your Little how to play a favorite game, shoot hoops, bake an apple pie or reading the funnies together. We’ve learned that being someone special to a child doesn’t take much more than that. But the impact is huge—for both of you!

Children need the friendship and guidance of someone like YOU.

Spending Time with Your Little
Once matched, Big Brothers and Big Sisters develop friendships with their Little Brothers and Little Sisters. Whether playing a game or simply hanging out - you bring magic into the life of a child. It's that simple.

Site-based matches meet in schools or after school programs for just 1 hour each week during the day. You do projects together, read in the library, eat lunch, shoot hoops and more.

Community-based matches are flexible and will fit your busy schedule. Bigs and Littles hang out in the community and go to museums, sports events, movies, and more. It's up to you and your Little!

We'll Support You
Each match is supported by professional staff at your local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. BBBS Counselors regularly check in with volunteers, children, and parents, and are always available to answer questions.

Regular events are held in your community, giving you an opportunity to meet other Bigs and Littles in your area. Plus, through the generosity of our partners and individuals in your community, there are often free tickets to ball games, the theater, and more!

Quick Steps to Become a Big
Here are the quick and easy steps we'll walk you through:

  1. Inquire Online. After you inquire online, our intake coordinator will contact you to complete the application offline and schedule you for an interview. Click here to start the process.
  2. Interview. A counselor will interview you in person at your home or any location convenient for you.
  3. Background Check. Child safety is our priority, so we'll review your records to ensure you'll be a good fit for our program. This will include a Department of Motor Vehicles check, a national criminal background check, and a child predator check.
  4. References. You'll need to provide at least three references of people we can talk to about your ability to be a mentor.
  5. Matching. We will review the kids in your area who need a Big Brother or Big Sister and find the best fit for you. Depending on your gender and the kind of child you'd like to work with, matching may go very quickly or take some time. Making the right match is important to our commitment to form lasting relationships.
