Is there really a need for a mentoring program in Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties?
Yes. There is often a misconception that families in the North Bay are wealthy and have few problems. Unfortunately, there are thousands of families in desperate situations that need assistance in all three counties we serve. Over the last several years, child abuse reports, youth unemployment, birth to teens, the number of children living in poverty, and preventable teen deaths have all increased. This is evidence that mentoring services are needed more than ever in our communities.
We provide Big Brothers or Big Sisters to any child age 6-14 that wants or needs one, for whatever reason. We continue to support the match until the child turns 18. Some youth are in our program because they lack a parent, while others just arrived in this country, and still others come from families facing severe economic hardships. What they all have in common is that they need care and attention.
How are Big Brothers or Big Sisters chosen?
To be a Big Brother or Big Sister (Big), all you need is an interest in being a friend or mentor to a young person and the time to spend with them. Before being matched with a child (Little), our volunteers undergo a thorough selection process, including a national background check, home safety check, personal references, and comprehensive interview and assessment. Each step in the process ensures the safety of the youth we serve and allows our staff to make the best possible match.
What is the time commitment?
For our community-based mentoring program, the commitment is 4 times per month for 1 year, with each visit being at least 1 hour - at times that fit your schedule.
We understand and accommodate volunteers that travel for business and vacation. If you are interested in mentoring, but can’t make that time commitment, there are site-based and group mentoring programs that may be better suited for you.
What do Bigs and Littles do together?
Bigs are paired with youth that have similar interests, so that each match is unique. Some matches may like to do active things together such as playing sports or exploring the great outdoors, while others enjoy going to the museum or just hanging out and playing games. Each match decides how they spend their time together. In addition, Big Brothers Big Sisters provides regular activities that matches can be involved in, such as a fall picnic, holiday events, art projects, etc.
Do I have a choice about who I am matched with?
Yes. You let us know your preferences in the type of child you want to work with. Then our clinically-trained staff look at your interests, personality, and activities to select a potential Little Brother or Sister for you. Once we find a potential child, we get your approval before arranging the match.
